10 Signs you need a new job

Get a new job

Deciding when to change jobs can be a big step! Sometimes it’s easy to know when to move on but often it can feel daunting if you’re unsure. However, it’s a candidate’s market right now and skilled technology professionals like you are in high demand! To make it easier for you, we’ve researched some of the most common signs you should find a new technology role because waiting too long to move on can have an impact on your long-term career – not to mention your mental health.

So, what are the best reasons to leave a job? How do you know it’s the right time to move on?

10 of the best reasons to leave a job:

Below we’ve listed ten signs that it’s time to consider starting your job search and taking the next step in your career.

1. You dread coming into work

Mondays or hump days, everyone has times they struggle to find motivation. Even if you’ve got your dream job there’s bound to be days that you just don’t want to open another email or solve another problem.

However, if every morning getting ready for work fills you with dread and you find that you lack any interest in your work then it’s time to look for a job that excites and challenges you. Your job should make you want to get out of bed in the morning!

2. You lack opportunities for training and personal development

Any respectable technology job should offer you the chance to develop new skills, advance your long-term goals, offer you new assignments and responsibilities and give you a clear path for advancement within the company.

If you have been in your job for a while but feel like you’re treading water rather than moving forwards with your career, then it’s time to look for a role that will give you the chance to grow, develop your skills and advance.

3. You’re feeling stressed and anxious

Losing sleep, a lack of appetite, and more frequent colds and headaches can all be physical signs that your job is causing you stress and anxiety. If your health is being impacted by stress at work and you are not being offered support, then you should consider a fresh start elsewhere.

4. You are being paid less than you are worth

Being paid below market rate is a red flag. If you have researched similar roles and found that you are being paid less than average, then it may be time to leave. Find out how your salary compares with other professionals in your field today.

5. You're working with outdated technologies

Companies work with older technology for all sorts of reasons, but a reliance on outdated technology, platforms or software can be a sign a company is unadventurous, unenterprising and closed to new ideas. Dealing with older technology and the problems it presents can be an enjoyable challenge but if you are passionate about new technology capabilities and your employer does not share your enthusiasm this can be a sign you aren’t a good fit.

Remember having obsolete technology is not a bad sign. Having obsolete technology and refusing to update it, is!

6. Other talented employees are jumping ship

A high turnover of talented staff is a sign that a company is not doing enough to retain its staff and may be indicative of more worrying problems, such as financial instability or the loss of a major client. High turnover may not be something to worry about immediately, but it should be a reason to reassess your situation.

7. You spend too much time working on support and BAU projects

Do you seem to spend most of your time on routine projects and managing support tickets? Without interruption these tasks can quickly become boring and easy to complete. If you find yourself completing your tasks too quickly or procrastinating throughout the day, then there’s a good chance your current role isn’t challenging and mentally stimulating enough. Boredom can also increase your likelihood of making mistakes.

If your manager can’t offer you more challenging assignments, or interesting greenfield projects then it’s time to look for a role that can keep you engaged.

8. Leadership is changing frequently

Have you suddenly been faced with rapid changes in organisational structure? Maybe you are no longer sure who you are reporting to? Sometimes reorganisation can be an improvement but if you are facing uncertainty and are no longer confident in your boss’s strategy and leadership then it may be time to look elsewhere.

9. You’re worried about the company’s ethics

It could be that you have been asked to do something unethical at work, but you could also simply feel that the company’s values don’t match up with yours. 71% of professionals would take a cut in pay to work with a company that has a mission they believe in.

If continuing to work for a company compromises your values or you believe that there are unethical business practices occurring, it’s time to trust your gut and find a role that aligns with your principles.

10. You’ve considered finding another job!

This is the big sign you are ready to move on. If you spend your days daydreaming about your dream role or meticulously planning your retirement, then your subconscious is telling you that you’re ready to take the next step in your career.
