A Day in the Life of Carl, Cloud Evangelist
Name: Carl Chalfont
Role: Cloud Evangelist
What exactly is a Cloud Evangelist?
We engage with senior stakeholders to outline the key benefits of cloud computing, and have a broad depth of knowledge across a number of cloud related technologies. It’s important to be able to take key stakeholders on a journey, outlining the steps required to make a successful cloud migration, always recommending the solution which will yield the best return on investment.
Why did you want to become a Cloud Evangelist?
This role fits with my broad knowledge of many cloud technologies, and I’m also proficient in a technical sales role. Plus I really enjoy working with senior stakeholders and forming trusted relationships.
How did you get started in the world of computing and how did you progress?
Initially I did a degree in Computing in Business and then went on to study for a PhD in Artificial Intelligence. I then went to work for Oracle which provided great experience, working with many blue-chip clients. Over the next decade many lead consultant engagements have been undertaken. I started working for Alscient in 2011 and have seen the company grow year on year building up an enviable client base. More recently, I have been involved in pre-sales related roles and the Cloud Evangelist role provides a great opportunity to demonstrate technical knowledge in a business context.
What are your core skills?
Broad technical knowledge (e.g. Salesforce, Amazon Web Services, Java Enterprise, Relational Databases), proficient in client-facing roles, strong people management skills.
How long have you worked for Alscient?
What made you choose to join Alscient ahead of other organisations?
I was one of the founding members. We identified a gap in the market for a consultancy which focussed on the use of cloud technologies. The organisation provides a great opportunity to learn new technologies and undertake diverse roles which you would not normally have access to within a larger consultancy.
Can you describe a typical day in the office?
There is no typical day. All days are different. Alscient work in a very fast paced fast moving environment. Some days are office-based, others involve trips out to client site. There is also flexibility to work from home. There are regular after work social meet ups, including trips to the pub, five-a-side and bowling nights.
What makes Alscient a great place work? Why is it different?
We all have the chance to learn lots of different technologies and perform multiple roles. It’s a great opportunity to work with many like-minded high calibre individuals. The culture is very inclusive with a flat management structure. Everyone has a voice and is valued.
What project are you most proud of?
I have been involved in many projects. All have different merits. It’s great to take a project from requirements capture all the way through to delivery to live launch and see the business benefit it brings.
What exciting things are on the horizon for Alscient?
We have recently won a large public-sector contract which is a greenfield development. The Amazon Web Services practice moves from strength to strength. Due to our growth we are in the process of seeking more office accommodation. We have also recently opened a London office and plans are afoot to expand even further afield.
