The JVM Thing

The Start…

In February we launched our own tech event to support the Java language community with 88 people in attendance. Neil Dunlop (Infinity Works Consulting) and Jon Humble (Sky Betting & Gaming) presented the debate that weighed up the differences between Java & Scala as they both run on the Java Virtual Machine. We learned that there is a very close association between Java & Scala. You can read more about this evening here – http://www.fruitionit.co.uk/2017/03/leeds-jvm-1-0-java-vs-scala/.

The overall feedback from the evening was tremendous & a clear demand for more of these types of events not just focused around Java or Scala but talking about other software languages too, related to the JVM ecosystem. As such, “The JVM Thing” was born, a JVM language community group to bring together Software Developers of these languages to share knowledge, promote learning and innovation.

Our 2nd talk…

Last Thursday we hosted our 2nd tech talk as part of our group “The JVM Thing” focused around Reactive Systems. Neil Dunlop (Infinity Works Consulting), James Pittendreigh (EE), Ben Foster (Infinity Works Consulting) & Robertas Šektus (EE) examined why we need Reactive Systems, what Reactive systems are and investigated what benefits they offer and provided practical examples of Reactive Systems in action… all in a range of JVM languages such as Scala, Akka, RxJava.

The talk was focused around discussing the “Reactive Manifesto” with the journey from monolith to microlith to micro services and now reactive systems. We touched on the importance of resilient, elastic, message driven and responsive applications and how to build reactive responsive applications with some greats hints and tips. We had live demos of Reactive Systems in practice in the form of Reactive Battleships and live twitter streaming.

 What’s next…

We’ll be running these events quarterly to start with, if demand increases we’ll do them more frequently…
