Leeds JVM 1.0 – Java vs Scala

As a business we’re very much in touch with the tech networking groups within the Leeds area including sponsoring key meet ups such as Agile Yorkshire & Leeds Sharp. We started to notice a real gap in the market for the Yorkshire JVM community to network informally whilst sharing knowledge, experience and challenges.

We kicked off our JVM tech debate with Java vs Scala on Thursday 2nd March with Neil Dunlop, Principal Developer @ Infinity Works Consulting (Team Java) and Jon Humble, Principal Developer @ Sky Betting & Gaming (Team Scala).

With 88 attendees signed up, we were completely overwhelmed with the amount of people who attended. The debate weighed up the differences between Java & Scala as they both run on the Java Virtual Machine. Scala has been described as the future of the JVM and we wanted to explore the truths from the alternative facts.

We learned that there is a very close association between Java & Scala. With the rise of the Scala community and maturity of the Java language, commercial acceptance is moving towards Scala, by its association with Java and we are expecting a wave of innovation, with a bright future for both.

Comments following the event included:

“Very interesting, good to hear arguments on both sides”.

“Useful to meet and share ideas with other developers”.

“Very useful, informative & insightful”.

“Useful for me as great introduction to Scala”.

The key outcome of this event is there is a huge demand for a regular Leeds based JVM community meet up – we have taken note and will be running a quarterly event throughout 2017!
